Today, Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) is reminding Iowa parents who do not regularly file taxes and have not received a Child Tax Credit (CTC) payment to sign up for extended 2021 payments before the Monday’s deadline.

Monday, November 15 is the last day for eligible non-filers to apply for monthly payments of up to $300 per child from the expanded Child Tax Credit. Eligible families can sign up for the monthly payments here.

This expansion was approved by Rep. Axne and her colleagues in March through the American Rescue Plan, the most recent federal COVID-19 relief package.

“The Child Tax Credit has been a critical lifeline for Iowa families, and I want to ensure everyone who qualifies signs up before the end of this year,” said Rep. Axne. “These monthly payments are helping hard working families pay their bills – and I expect these payments to continue as we work to get the Build Back Better Act signed into law to extend these tax cuts for another year.”

Families are eligible for the expanded CTC if they have at least one child under the age of 18 and made up to $150,000 for a couple or $112,500 for a family with a single parent (also called Head of Household).

Eligible families who do not sign up by the November 15 deadline can still claim the CTC through a 2022 tax filing.

Background:

More than 340,000 Iowa families are receiving monthly benefits from the expanded Child Tax Credit.

This benefit is putting $157.3 million in tax cuts each month into the pockets of Iowa families, including $43.7 million for families in Iowa’s Third Congressional District, according to data from the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Joint Economic Committee report.

The American Rescue Plan made the Child Tax Credit fully refundable – as the previous credit was refundable only up to $1,400, leaving an estimated one-third of children in families unable to claim the full credit because of low earnings.
