Today, Congressional Task Force on American Hostages and Americans Wrongfully Detained Abroad Co-Chairs Rep. Haley Stevens (MI-11) and Rep. French Hill (AR-2) released the following statement in response to a Russian court’s decision to deny Brittney Griner's appeal for a reduced prison sentence:

"Russia's decision to uphold Brittney Griner's nine-year prison sentence is another example of Russia choosing to play political games in the midst of their illegal war in Ukraine and make a mockery of the justice system. Brittney Griner is not a political pawn, she is an American who has had nearly eight months stolen from her and shouldn't spend another moment in Russian detention. While this outcome is unsurprising, it is unacceptable. Our task force will continue to work with the Biden Administration until Brittney Griner, Paul Whelan, and other Americans wrongly detained abroad are free and reunited with their loved ones."
