U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) is encouraging Granite Staters to participate in Drug Take Back Day, an event for people to drop off unused prescription medication. Drug Take Back Day will occur on Saturday, April 30, and you can find a collection site near you at takebackday.dea.gov.
“Substance misuse continues to devastate families and communities across New Hampshire, and tragically, it can start with a family member or friend taking a prescription drug that wasn’t prescribed to them. That’s why it’s so important that we help prevent the misuse of prescription drugs through promoting proper storage and disposal of expired, unused, or unwanted medicine. Participating in Drug Take Back Day is one easy step forward we can all take to help save lives and make a difference,” said Senator Hassan.
Senator Hassan is working to stem the substance use disorder crisis. Senators Hassan and Mike Braun (R-IN) are working to pass their bipartisan bill to make it easier to dispose of opioids and other medications. Last year, and following Senator Hassan’s advocacy, the Biden administration removed some requirements that limited health care providers’ ability to prescribe medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorder. Senator Hassan is continuing to press for passage of the Mainstreaming Addiction Treatment (MAT) Act, a bipartisan bill that she reintroduced last year with Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), that would fully eliminate these bureaucratic barriers. Senator Hassan has worked with her colleagues to pass into law the bipartisan INTERDICT Act, which has provided critical tools to Customs and Border Protection to help detect and intercept fentanyl and other illegal synthetic opioids. In addition, the most recent annual defense bill included Senator Hassan’s bipartisan bill with Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) to hold accountable countries like China that are facilitating America’s fentanyl-fueled opioid crisis.
