Yesterday, Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01), helped pass the bipartisan Prevent Exposure to 5 Narcotics and Toxics, or PREVENT Act of 2022 to protect Customs and Border Protection (CBP) law enforcement officials when handling illicit drugs like fentanyl and equip them with the training needed to prevent accidental exposure.
"Fentanyl poses a threat to the health and safety of members of law enforcement as they perform their duties, and this legislation will protect our first responders on the frontline of this epidemic by equipping them with the necessary tools to keep them and our communities safe," said Congressman Chris Pappas. "I'm pleased to see this legislation pass with overwhelming bipartisan support and urge the Senate to swiftly pass this important legislation."
Background:
In March 2022, Pappas introduced legislation to increase penalties for drug dealers and strengthen the United States' efforts to stop the trafficking of illegal drugs, such as fentanyl, through the dark web.
Pappas also introduced the bipartisan Save Americans from the Fentanyl Emergency Act of 2022, or SAFE Act of 2022, to permanently schedule all fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs to ensure law enforcement can keep them off the streets.Pappas is a cosponsor of H.R. 5382, the POWER Act, which would provide grants for law enforcement to purchase chemical screening devices to detect substances like illegal fentanyl.
