Save Voters Act

Ohio

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Voting is a permanent guarantee that is the very lifeblood of our nation. As the Representative of Ohio’s Third Congressional District and the Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Representative Joyce Beatty is committed to doing everything in her power toward making it easier, not more difficult, for people to vote.

That’s why last week, Rep. Beatty introduced the Save Voters Act. This legislation will protect the voices of all eligible voters by prohibiting states from using the questionable voter purge tactics that Republicans in Ohio recently used to take tens of thousands of eligible voters off state voter rolls. Currently, potential voters can be purged from voter rolls in Ohio if they do not cast a ballot for six consecutive years or respond to a written notice like a postcard.

To allow the right to vote to be restricted or removed over something as minor as failing to respond to a postcard is unthinkable, especially when this practice disproportionately harms communities of color, veterans, and vulnerable populations. It should be easier for potential voters to exercise their right than it is for election officials to purge voters.
