Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Harris said in a debate Wednesday that the election is about whether the country “is on the right track,” but Democratic challenger Heather Mizeur accused him of trying to soften his abortion position and said he has not explained why he was in the White House as Republicans considered blocking the results of the 2020 presidential election.

“It’s about whether you think you’re better off than you were two years ago, whether you think this country is on the right track. That’s it,” Harris said during the only debate scheduled in the high-profile 1st Congressional District race.

The candidates became animated at times during the nearly hourlong debate at Cecil College, particularly when Mizeur challenged Harris about abortion and the 2020 election.

Mizeur has sought to promote a finding of the congressional Jan. 6 committee in July that Harris was among Republican members who gathered with then-President Donald Trump in December 2020 and discussed having Vice President Mike Pence reject the results of the presidential election.
