From January  16, 2022 post.

Ahead of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan released the following statement:

“Through his commitment to non-violent action and with his unshakable determination, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped the American people – and people around the world – understand and appreciate the importance of civil rights and social justice. As we reflect on his life and mission, it is important to recognize that we still have much more work to do to strengthen racial justice in our country – and to ensure that all people are fully included in our society, our economy, and our democracy.

“Dr. King’s legacy resonates with me today as we push to pass legislation protecting our democracy and the right to vote. Across the country we have seen dangerous attempts to interfere with free, fair, and impartially administered elections. These efforts threaten the integrity of our election system – and they disproportionally affect communities of color. In doing so, partisan politicians threaten the Constitutional rights of millions of Americans and undermine the very foundation of our democracy: the freedom to vote.

“As we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, we must recommit to protecting our democracy, standing up for our values, and building toward greater progress.”
