Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced new hires and promotions in the executive office’s legal and appointments divisions.
Office of Legal Counsel
Nicholas Bagley, Chief Legal Counsel
Currently, Nick serves as special counsel to the governor. Nick was a professor at the University of Michigan Law School with expertise in regulatory and health law. He previously served as special counsel in the governor’s Office of Legal Counsel from March 2020 to August 2020. Nick has also worked in private practice, argued cases for the Department of Justice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals, and clerked at the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Nick received his J.D. from New York University and his undergraduate degree from Yale.
"Nick Bagley brings a wealth of experience to the executive office and I am confident that he will help us continue putting Michiganders first,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “Nick was instrumental in helping us keep communities safe during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in his role as Special Counsel, and we are excited to welcome him back in a permanent capacity as we continue making progress on the kitchen-table issues that matter most to families.”
Appointments
Sumaiya Ahmed Sheikh, Director of Appointments
Sumaiya will join the executive office from the Oakland County Democratic Party. Previously, she held various roles in interfaith groups, youth civic engagement organizations, and non-profits, including the Michigan Muslim Community Council, Emgage, and the Interfaith Leadership Council. She has organized community events from the national scale to local level and brings a range of experience and expertise to the office. Sumaiya is a graduate of Oakland University.
