U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that Hawai‘i will receive $5,901,475 in new federal funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs to expand and improve the Hawai‘i State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe.
“This federal funding will help us continue to honor the thousands of brave service members from Hawai‘i who put their lives on the line to serve our country, and ensure their legacies are remembered long after they have passed,” said Senator Schatz.
The Hawai‘i State Veterans Cemetery currently serves more than 83,000 veterans and their eligible family members living within 75 miles of the cemetery. The grant will fund 1,099 pre-placed crypts, improvements to the existing maintenance wash rack structure, footings, oil separator and drainage system, turf seeding, and supporting infrastructure on approximately one acre of land. It comes from the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program, which awards states funding to build and maintain veterans cemeteries.
