WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18) voted for H.R. 1808, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2021, commonsense legislation to ban assault weapons.

“What all these mass tragedies have in common is that the weapons of choice were assault weapons, weapons designed for war. They are the most effective way to hunt humans and slaughter as many as possible as quickly as possible. They decimate victims and have no place in civilian life,” said Eshoo. “I voted for the Assault Weapons Ban in 1994, and I voted today to put it in place again. It was a terrible mistake for Congress to allow it to expire. We can stop this madness in America.”
Background
• This legislation will not confiscate guns from law-abiding owners; Gun owners can keep their existing assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. During the ten years that the 1994 ban was law, no firearms were confiscated from lawful gun owners.
• Eight of the ten deadliest mass shootings in recent American history have involved assault weapons that would have been banned for purchase under the assault weapons ban which expired in 2004.
• Researchers estimate that if the federal Assault Weapons Ban was in place, there would be 70 percent fewer mass shooting deaths.
