U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) today introduced legislation to permanently shut down the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility. The Senate bill introduction follows companion legislation introduced in the House of Representatives by U.S. Representative Kaiali‘i Kahele (D-Hawai‘i).

“Together we will work to secure federal funding to defuel, conduct congressional oversight, and push for legislation. Our bicameral bill will help us in our fight to protect our water and shut down Red Hill,” said Senator Schatz.

Earlier this week, Schatz secured $100 million in new federal funding to defuel Red Hill. Schatz’s funding legislation was included in a short-term spending bill passed by the House of Representatives on Tuesday and is expected to easily pass the Senate and be signed into law by the president next week. Schatz continues to work with senior leaders in the Biden Administration and the Senate Appropriations Committee to secure additional funding in the president’s annual budget request and a much larger appropriations package expected to be taken up by Congress next month.
