U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) today announced that the Honolulu Community Action Program will receive $7,142,204 in federal grant funding to support its Head Start and Early Head Start programs. These programs provide comprehensive early childhood education and development services to low-income children and pregnant mothers.
“No single program has taught us more about how important early childhood development programs are to a child’s education and success than Head Start,” said Senator Schatz, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “This funding will help ensure that more kids on O‘ahu are given opportunities to thrive.”
The new federal grant funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Head Start supports the development, health, and family well-being of children aged 3-5 as they prepare for school, while Early Head Start supports development for infants and toddlers under age 3 and provides prenatal support to pregnant mothers. The Honolulu Community Action Program serves more than 1,500 children and their families every year through Head Start and Early Head Start programs. It has supported economically disadvantaged families on O‘ahu since 1965.
