From December 9, 2021 post.
Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) issued the following statement after the House passed three bills regarding the Chinese Communist Party’s human rights abuses:
“The United States should stand up for the rights to life, human dignity, and religious freedom around the world and lead the way in holding the Chinese Communist Party accountable for its egregious human rights abuses," said Congressman Wenstrup. "We cannot turn a blind eye to the genocide being perpetrated by the CCP against the Uyghur population and members of other religious and ethnic minorities. As well, the Chinese government continues to stonewall those seeking answers regarding the whereabouts and wellbeing of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai. These congressional actions are an important step, but we must continue to put the pressure on the CCP."
Background on the bills passed by the House:
H.R. 1155, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, ensures that goods made with forced labor in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China do not enter the United States market.
H.Res. 837, Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the International Olympic Committee failed to adhere to its own human rights commitments.
H.Res. 317, Condemning the ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity being committed against Uyghurs and members of other religious and ethnic minority groups by the People’s Republic of China.
Earlier this year, Congressman Wenstrup led a coalition of 45 members of Congress in writing to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan regarding the Chinese Communist Party’s coercive population control efforts and grave human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
