Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH5) joined GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA23), Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, Representative Troy Balderson (R-OH12), Representative Mike Carey (R-OH15), Representative Steve Chabot (R-OH1), and Representative Brad Wenstrup (R-OH2) for a roundtable regarding the rising fentanyl crisis plaguing our nation.
“As a conference, we are united in the fight against the fentanyl crisis,” said Latta. “This afternoon, Leader McCarthy was able to hear firsthand how this epidemic is affecting our friends, families, and neighbors in Ohio. We continue to see the horrific effects of this crisis and medical professionals do not believe that we have yet reached the ceiling on overdoses. This crisis will continue to wreak havoc as these harmful narcotics pour across our southern border. Ensuring that fentanyl is classified as a Schedule 1 narcotic is critical to providing law enforcement with the tools they need to keep this poison out of our communities.”

Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH5) and Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA9) introduced the Halt Lethal Trafficking (HALT) Fentanyl Act. The Halt Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act closely tracks recommendations to Congress submitted by the Office of National Drug Control Policy in September. It would permanently place fentanyl related substances (FRS) into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), simplify registration processes for certain research with Schedule I substances, removing barriers that currently impede such work, and provide for exemption of individual FRS from Schedule I when evidence demonstrates it is appropriate.
