AUSTIN, Texas – On this day fifty-one years ago, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade that protected the right to choose for Texans and women across the country. Yet today, women in Texas have faced an onslaught of attacks on their fundamental freedoms – all because of Donald Trump and the cruelty of MAGA Republicans like Ted Cruz in power.

“Roe v. Wade would still be in place if not for Trump’s presidency, and now, he’s running on a pledge to ban abortion nationwide, which would have catastrophic consequences for millions. Right now, Texas women are living an all-American nightmare. Medical decisions should be between patients and doctors but here in Texas, Republicans like Ken Paxton and Ted Cruz can make your medical decisions for you — even if that means your life's on the line. Texas voters are feeling the consequences of the state’s abortion ban and the overturning of Roe v. Wade every single day – that’s why Texas Democrats are working overtime to reinstate the basic reproductive freedoms protected under Roe v. Wade. The stakes in November could not be higher, and Texans will remember that freedoms are on the line at the ballot box,” said Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa.

“Democrats are the only party that recognizes the simple fact that no woman or child should be forced to give birth against their will. While Roe v. Wade wasn’t perfect, the landmark decision provided federal protections for abortion access for nearly five decades. This anniversary reaffirms our fight to codify reproductive freedom this November. We’ve seen the power of what the Texas Supreme Court can do with abortion access. We’ve seen the power of what local city council members can do with abortion travel bans. And we’ve seen the power of what lawmakers can do to  strip – or secure – their state’s abortion rights laws. And each and every pro-choice Texas Democrat that’s elected will bring the movement to codify abortion rights at the federal and state level one step further. Today, we recognize the significance of the Roe v. Wade decision and honor all those who fought tooth and nail to expand abortion access for decades and tomorrow, we continue our movement to elect Texas Democrats that place our freedom over political gain,” said Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Monique Alcala.
