Reno, Nev. (News 4 & FOX 11) — Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada) is bringing forward legislation to spread awareness and prevent human trafficking.

One of two bills Senator Cortez Masto is introducing aims to gather more information on social media's part in targeting victims online. It's estimated more than 30% of sex trafficking victims are recruited on social media platforms. The bill will allow more research on how predators use social media to lure victims.

The second bill aims to help airports and other public transportation hubs combat human trafficking. Airports in Nevada are already implementing prevention policies like posting a hotline number in restrooms and designated safe spaces. The bill would add $10 million more to boost those efforts.

"It's not about Democrats and Republicans. It’s about senators getting on board to pass legislation to address the crime happening in our communities when it comes to sex trafficking," said Senator Cortez Masto.

Both bills have bipartisan support with Republican Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) also introducing the social media bill and Republican Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) as one of the authors drafting the bill regarding airports and transportation hubs.
