HENDERSON, NV

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed four pieces of legislation into law in support of Nevada’s LGBTQ+ community. The Governor signed the legislation while attending a grand reopening at the Henderson Equality Center.

“Nevada is known as a warm and welcoming place for all– in our State, we celebrate our diversity,” said Gov. Sisolak. “I am so grateful to sign legislation to ensure that our LGBTQ+ community feels safe, protected and can continue to grow and flourish in the Silver State.”

Joined by sponsors, presenters, and community members, the Governor signed the following bills into law today:

  • Senate Bill 109, sponsored by Senator Pat Spearman and presented in partnership with Andre Wade from Silver State Equality, requires local governments to collect demographic information related to race, ethnicity, gender identity and gender expression, so we can continue to take steps to ensure our government reflects our community. Representation matters.

  • Senate Bill 237, sponsored by Senators Dallas Harris and Melanie Scheible and presented in partnership with Treasurer Zach Conine and Erik Jimenez in the Treasurer’s Office, ensures that our State provides equal access and opportunities to help growth LGBTQ-owned businesses.
  • Senate Bill 275, again sponsored by Senator Harris and presented in partnership with Andre Wade and David Parks, modernizes Nevada’s HIV criminal laws and reestablishes the Advisory Task Force on HIV Exposure Modernization for the 2021-2022 Legislative Interim. We know that laws that criminalize people living with HIV don’t stop the spread, but they actually hurt our public health efforts.
  • Senate Bill 325, sponsored and presented by Senator James Settelmeyer, will allow pharmacists to use their expert knowledge to increase access to care to HIV patients, in some cases without a prescription from a health-care practitioner.
