Today, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak named Shellie Hughes as the next director of the Nevada Department of Taxation. Hughes, who is serving as the Chief Deputy Executive Director for the Department of Taxation, will take on the new role on August 23. Hughes will replace Melanie Young, who is transitioning to the Governor’s Finance Office as budget administrator. Young has served as the Director of the Department of Taxation since January 7, 2019.
“I want to thank Director Young for her incredible dedication and steadfast service at the Department of Taxation. In addition to making the department more efficient for Nevada taxpayers, she was critical in bringing oversight to the state’s recreational marijuana industry and helped spearhead the transition of oversight of the industry to the Cannabis Compliance Board. I will forever be grateful for her service in my cabinet and I am so excited she will continue to serve Nevada in this new role,” Gov. Sisolak said. “I am thrilled to welcome Shellie Hughes to this important position and I am confident that her time within the department, plus more than 15 years of experience in state and local tax law, make her a perfect fit to lead this agency and continue this important work.”
Hughes has been with the department since 2016. Her duties include assisting the Director in the day-to-day operations; overseeing the development of technical bulletins, regulations, and legislation; and consulting with the Attorney General’s office regarding legal matters of the Department.
Before joining the Nevada Department of Taxation, Hughes served for 6 years as Chief Legal Advisor to California State Board of Equalization Chairman Jerome E. Horton and 3 years as Tax Counsel for the California State Board of Equalization's Legal Department Appeals Division in the area of business and special taxes. Hughes has more than 15 years of experience in state and local tax law, including time with the California Franchise Tax Board.
Hughes graduated from McGeorge School of Law in 2006, and received her JD degree with a tax concentration. She received her BA degree In Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Hughes lives in Reno.
