Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) applauded the bipartisan, U.S. Senate confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the next Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Jackson will succeed U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer who announced his intentions earlier this year to retire at the end of the current court session. With her confirmation now complete, Judge Jackson will become the first African American woman to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

“This is a historic moment in our nation’s history as the U.S. Supreme Court welcomes an eminently qualified jurist and the court grows to better reflect the diversity which is fundamental to our country’s history and its citizens’ lived experience,” said Congressman Bishop. “Judge Jackson displayed heroic candor and courtesy as she knowledgeably navigated the grueling yet thorough confirmation hearing process. She emerges strongly, bringing to bear a stellar professional record and the bipartisan faith of our Congress, as she ascends to our nation’s highest court.”

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is a distinguished jurist who has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since June 2021. Previously, she served for more than eight years on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. There, she delivered more than 600 opinions, only 12 of which were reversed.

Over the course of her career, Judge Jackson has been confirmed — with bipartisan support — by the U.S. Senate three times, twice unanimously. Her Judiciary tenure has earned her a reputation of fairness and impartiality with clear commitment to equal justice and the Constitution.
