Administrative Assistant Needed In District 3 Office of the Nebraska Legislature

Starting Pay Range: $31,023 to $34,898 per year based on your experience

Salary Determinations: Graduation from high school and/or equivalent education and one-year experience in varied responsible office positions. All new employees serve a six-month probationary period. At the conclusion of the probationary period the employee is eligible for up to a 4 percent raise.

Under the general supervision of Senator Blood or the Legislative Aide when Senator Blood is unavailable, the right candidate will perform work involving secretarial services, administrative services, public relations, office management, constituent outreach and other works as required.

Examples of Work include but are not limited to:

- Performs various public relations functions. These may include: receiving/documenting daily calls and visits; ascertaining the nature of the request; answering inquiries or referring callers to the appropriate resource; and disseminating information when appropriate.

- Types letters, memos, reports and legislation-related materials.

- Reads and routes incoming and outgoing mail, reviews mail with senator and keeps a file in shared drive of correspondence.

- Maintains confidential correspondence, subject matter and other legislature-related files.

- Attends/Screens legislation and public hearings, as assigned. This may include: coordinating hearings on the senator’s bills with the senator’s calendar; notifying proponents of hearing dates; and notifying proponents of floor action.

- Arranges meeting space or tours for constituent groups visiting the capitol.

- Maintains office supplies and equipment and inventory for the office.

- Maintains clipping file and follow media for the file.

- Maintains current mailing list of constituents.

- Assembles and sends mass mailings.

- Attends community meetings and other events to represent District 3.

- Attends weekly staff meeting.

- Helps generate ideas for district 3 social media.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

Full Performance Knowledge Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of the legislative process; the structure and operation of the Unicameral and is divisions; the structure of state government; the concerns and interests of the senator and the senator’s district; travel, correspondence and filing procedures; computer knowledge, modern office practices; and telephone etiquette.

Ability to: communicate effectively; type; compose letters, work independently with little supervision; work under pressure, maintain confidentiality; document daily work tasks; and interact well with a diverse group of people.

Any combination of training and/or experience that will enable the candidate to possess the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A general qualification guideline for this position is graduation from high school or equivalent education and one-year experience in varied responsible office positions.
