Today, the House of Representatives passed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which directs the Department of Justice to expedite its review of hate crimes, particularly the increase in hate crimes and violence against Asian-American and Pacific Islanders in the United States throughout the last year.

“Reprehensible acts of violence will never be tolerated. This legislation will help raise awareness of the crimes being committed against Asian Americans and give law enforcement more resources to prevent them, " said Congressman John Moolenaar. “The Asian-American community is a tremendous part of Michigan's diversity and everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

In addition to expediting the review of violent crimes against Asian Americans in the past year, the legislation would also create grants for state and local law enforcement agencies to respond to acts of violence and discrimination.
