Today, the June jobs report from the federal government reported 850,000 new jobs created in June, exceeding the estimate of 706,000 expected by economic analysts. The faster than expected growth in new jobs occurred in the same month that 22 states chose to end the extra $300 a week from the federal government for unemployment. The extra $300 a week for unemployment is available until September 7 as part of the $2 trillion bill President Biden signed in March, even as many states lifted pandemic restrictions that month.
“This weekend President Biden will be one of the many visitors northern Michigan welcomes every summer and he will likely see ‘Help Wanted’ signs in small businesses across the region. If he wants to say the economy is back on track, then ending the extra money for unemployment should be an easy call, especially as available jobs go unfilled across the state,” said Congressman John Moolenaar. “I hope President Biden will tell Governor Whitmer to end the extra money for unemployment so Michigan small businesses can find the workers they need during this busy summer season.”
In May, Moolenaar and the six other Republicans in Michigan's congressional delegation called for Governor Whitmer to help Michigan small businesses and end the extra money for unemployment.
Last weekend, The Wall Street Journal published an analysis that showed the unemployment rolls declined faster in states where governors decided to end the extra money for unemployment. The article states, “The number of workers paid benefits through regular state programs fell 13.8% by the week ended June 12 from mid-May—when many governors announced changes—in states saying that benefits would end in June, according to an analysis by Jefferies LLC economists. That compares with a 10% decline in states ending benefits in July, and a 5.7% decrease in states ending benefits in September.”
