Today, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development announced a new $5.5 million community block grant for Midland. According to HUD, the city will be able to use the grant to create natural flood mitigation infrastructure.
“Today’s grant can be used to help prevent future flooding and play an important role in protecting our communities,” said Congressman John Moolenaar. "The funding is part of more than $100 million in federal support I have helped secure for rebuilding homes, businesses, and infrastructure damaged by last year’s flooding. There is more work to do and I will continue to work with local, state, and federal leaders to help our region recover.”
Congressman Moolenaar is Michigan’s senior member of the House Appropriations Committee where he has worked across the aisle to support funding for the community block development program that made today’s grant possible. He has also led last year’s efforts to secure a federal disaster declaration for mid Michigan, which led to more than $100 million in federal assistance for homeowners, business owners, and communities.
