The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that state and local governments affected by major disasters in 2020 and 2021 will receive 90 percent federal cost-sharing support from the federal government. Previously, the federal government was responsible for 75 percent of the costs, and state and local governments were responsible for 25 percent. This new cost-sharing ratio will apply to mid-Michigan communities who received federal support in response to the May 2020 flooding and dam failures.

“I have fought for our region to receive additional cost-sharing support from the federal government and this announcement is the culmination of that work. This additional cost-sharing will save local governments and area residents millions of dollars,” said Congressman John Moolenaar.

“We are so appreciative of Congressman Moolenaar’s leadership on this critical issue,” said Tony Stamas, President & CEO of the Midland Business Alliance. “Increasing the federal share of FEMA assistance will provide local governments in our region with financial relief that is extremely welcome and appreciated. Congressman Moolenaar’s direct engagement on this issue on behalf of our flood-impacted region made this result possible.”

Moolenaar has been a long-time advocate for the new policy announced by FEMA. He previously introduced the Rural Disaster Support and Relief Act which would have implemented the same cost-sharing ratio FEMA announced.
