Last night, The Detroit News reported that construction of a new lock at the Soo Locks is expected to cost two to three times more than originally estimated. According to The News, the higher costs could also have "schedule impacts" on the completion of a new lock.

"The inflation crisis under President Biden has driven up the cost of a new lock and created uncertainty for when it will be completed. I will be demanding answers from the Army Corps about its cost estimates and how it plans to be accountable to taxpayers for these overruns while completing this crucial project for our state and the nation. The Biden Administration should immediately reprioritize funding that has already been approved by Congress and direct it toward completing the new lock," said Congressman John Moolenaar, Michigan’s senior member of the House Appropriations Committee.
