Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) expressed disappointment at the acquittal of former President Donald Trump in the impeachment trial that ended today, and made the following statement:

“I’m disappointed with today’s Senate verdict because the proof of Trump’s guilt was overwhelming. There has never been a better case for impeachment in our history. What Donald Trump did in inciting an insurrection started last summer when he said that, if he were not re-elected in November, the election had to be ‘rigged.’ It continued in his speech from the Ellipse on January 6 when he encouraged his inflamed insurrectionists with the charge to ‘fight like hell.’

“The House impeachment managers did a wonderful job in presenting the case. The defense was pathetic and an insult to lawyers everywhere.

“While it is unfortunate that not enough Republicans with fortitude voted as truth dictated and the law demanded, there were seven who showed courage, and I commend them.”
