The U.S. House of Representatives passed Congresswoman Lisa McClain’s (R-MI) bill Tuesday to rename the St. Clair Post Office after Marine Corporal Jeffrey Robert Standfest.

“Cpl. Standfest was an American hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice and deserves to be honored by his community,” said Rep. McClain. “I’m glad the House finally passed my legislation to rename the St. Clair Post Office after Cpl. Standfest. Thank you to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for joining me in creating this lasting tribute.”

Cpl. Standfest, a 2005 graduate of St. Clair High School, was only 23 years old when an improvised explosive device struck and killed him in the Helmand province of Afghanistan while he was on foot patrol with his canine, Sgt. Rupert, a bomb sniffing dog. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

Reps. Jack Bergman (R-MI), Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Peter Meijer (R-MI), John Moolenaar (R-MI), Fred Upton (R-MI), Tim Walberg (R-MI), Andy Levin (D-MI), Haley Stevens (D-MI) and Debbie Dingell (D-MI) cosponsored this legislation.

Rep. Lisa McClain spoke on the House floor on Tuesday in memory of Cpl. Standfest.
