WASHINGTON –  U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) is leading efforts to improve commercial and curbside recycling.

Boozman, a co-chair of the Senate Recycling Caucus, gained insight from recycling industry leaders on challenges to the nation’s recycling infrastructure during a Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee hearing.

“We have the ability to improve our nation’s recycling infrastructure and better leverage the economic and environmental benefits of recycling and composting,” Boozman said. “One of the biggest obstacles facing recycling is the lack of reliable and consistent data. This input from industry leaders will help improve our legislative strategy and lead to meaningful, long-term solutions to America’s recycling challenges.”

Boozman, EPW Chairman Tom Carper (D-DE) and Ranking Member Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) have launched a bipartisan initiative, the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act, to examine needed improvements to recycling collection rates and education in order to bolster the U.S. recycling industry.

At Boozman’s invitation, Charles Levell Hairston, Vice President and General Manager of Recycling and Recovered Fibers at International Paper, testified before the committee in support of the proposal.

As a leading global supplier of renewable fiber-based products, International Paper is an innovator in the recycling industry. The company has six facilities in the Natural State and employs nearly 600 Arkansans.
