The bill would instruct the Environmental Protection Agency to create standards for the incineration of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals to prevent the emittance of toxic substances in the air.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), a member of the bipartisan Congressional PFAS Task Force, reintroduced his PFAS Safe Disposal Act to protect Michiganders and all Americans from air contamination when PFAS chemicals are destroyed by incineration. The PFAS Safe Disposal Act instructs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create standards requiring that the incineration of any material containing PFAS eliminates the emittance of PFAS into the air and places an interim prohibition on the incineration of materials containing PFAS until EPA finalizes the standards. The bill is included in a larger PFAS reform package that the House will consider this week.
"Sadly, Michiganders know all too well the impact PFAS and other harmful chemicals have on the health and wellbeing of our communities. My PFAS Safe Disposal Act ensures that we find safe methods to dispose of PFAS that protect our homes and communities against contamination," said Rep. Levin. Since his first term in Congress, Congressman Levin has championed numerous efforts to address the growing hazard these dangerous chemicals pose to our communities. Last fall, Rep. Levin joined his Michigan colleagues in leading a letter to demand higher standards and increased oversight for PFAS near schools and childcare facilities. In 2019, Rep. Levin's measure requiring the Secretary of Defense to ensure that all incineration of materials containing PFAS is conducted in a manner that eliminates PFAS while also ensuring that no PFAS is emitted into the air was signed into law.
