Today, Congressman Andy Levin (MI-09), member of the House Education and Labor Committee and Deputy Whip of the Congressional Progressive Caucus released the following statement:

"After months of intense debate, the House of Representatives delivered Friday on President Biden's agenda by passing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the rule to advance the Build Back Better Act. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will improve our Michigan economy drastically.

"Modernizing our infrastructure will create millions of good-paying, union jobs that cannot be outsourced and will make a real impact for communities across Macomb and Oakland Counties as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will:

  • Ensure that a majority of Michigan contractors receiving our state's expected $7.3 billion in federal highway aid and $563 million for bridge replacement and repairspay construction workers a fair, prevailing wage so that local labor markets and workers won't be undercut;
  • Replace our lead water lines with $1.3 billion coming to the state to improve water infrastructure;
  • Upgrade our power infrastructure with the single-largest investment in clean energy transmission in America, building thousands of miles of new, resilient transmission lines to facilitate the expansion of renewable energy after historic outages in Michigan;
  • Create grants to support battery and battery component manufacturing, manufacturing facilities, and retooling and retrofitting of existing Michigan auto facilities;
  • Invest $110 million over five years in good-paying jobs building a nationwide network of electric vehicle charging infrastructure along highway corridors in the state, accelerating the adoption of Michigan-made electric vehicles to help address the climate crisis and support domestic manufacturing jobs; and
  • Include a comprehensive Buy America provision so all taxpayer-funded infrastructure and public works projects are built with American iron, steel, manufactured products, and construction materials, revitalizing our Michigan industrial base;
"For too long, Michigan workers have been left behind and our families have suffered the disastrous consequences of a shrinking middle class, unsafe drinking water and the climate crisis. I congratulate President Biden on this incredible victory and urge him to sign the bill right away.
