Rep. Stevens Votes for Common-sense, Bipartisan “Red Flag” Law to Remove Firearms from Dangerous Individuals

Washington, DC– Today, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) voted in support of “Extreme Risk Protection” legislation in the wake of the senseless tragedies in Buffalo and Uvalde and increased gun violence across our country.

“Extreme risk protection laws save lives,”said Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI). “We have witnessed their effectiveness in 19 states and the District of Columbia, who have adopted their own “red flag” laws. When someone is desperate and in crisis, those closest to them are often the first to see warning signs. So many of the tragedies that have recently devastated our communities could have been preventable had there been red-flag laws in place.  It’s absolutely time that the entire country benefits from these common-sense laws. I’m thrilled by the passage of this life-saving legislation, and I urge my colleagues on the other side in the Senate to listen to the American people and deliver this bill to the President’s desk. ”

The Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2022 would grant petitions from family members and law enforcement officers to temporarily remove access to firearms for individuals who are deemed to pose an extreme risk to themselves or others. Courts could approve “extreme risk protection orders” for as many as 14 days, and long-term orders for as many as 180 days with possible renewals. Individuals subjected would have to surrender their firearms and could retrieve them after the order ends if they pass a background check.

Since coming to Congress, gun violence prevention has been a top priority for Representative Stevens, who proudly serves on the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
