Teach for America Detroit, an AmeriCorps program that recruits and supports educators to serve in under-resourced communities, announced the appointment of Michael Griffie to senior managing director of external affairs.
In the new role, Griffie will oversee the organization’s fundraising and development, branding and marketing, and public affairs teams. Prior to joining TFA, he served as an attorney at Butzel Long and then a lobbyist at the Michigan Legislative Consultants, after spending a decade in education as a charter school principal.
“Michael is a dynamic leader who cares deeply about our children and community,” says Armen Hratchian, executive director of TDA Detroit. “We’re honored to have him join our team as we continue to pursue our goal of helping children in communities of great need across Michigan reach key educational milestones that indicate they are on a path to economic mobility. Together, we will co-create a future filled with possibility.”
Griffie’s arrival to TFA Detroit comes on the heels of several executive appointments, including the elevation of Michelle Navarro Ormsby to senior managing director of strategy and program.
Over the past three years the organization has made headway with its new strategic direction to nationally recruit and invest in high-performing early- and mid-career teachers who serve students in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and non-profit charter schools across the city.
