Tonight, the House of Representatives voted to reauthorize federal mental health programs, passing H.R. 7666, The Restoring Hope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act. A provision of the legislation bans the federal government from using taxpayer funding to buy crack pipes. The legislation passed, 402-20.

“I voted for today’s common-sense legislation because it will protect taxpayers and make sure their tax dollars are never used to purchase crack pipes,” said Congressman John Moolenaar, who voted for the legislation on Wednesday. “I voted against Biden’s funding for crack pipes last year when I voted against the Democrats’ partisan $2 trillion spending bill. Today’s funding ban is a victory for taxpayers.”

Earlier this year it was revealed that the Biden Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services were allowing anti-addiction groups to use federal funding for “Safe Smoking Kits” that included crack pipes. The program was funded as part of the $2 trillion spending bill Biden signed into law in March 2021 as “COVID relief” for the so-called the “American Rescue Plan.”
