Today, Congressman John Moolenaar offered an amendment that would prohibit the State Department from using taxpayer funding to stop the flow of energy through the Line 5 pipeline. Moolenaar offered the amendment during the House Appropriations Committee’s annual debate on funding for the State Department in the next federal budget. The amendment was supported by all the Republicans on the committee, as well as Democrats Tim Ryan of Ohio and Henry Cuellar of Texas. In the final vote tally, the amendment was rejected, with 25 members supporting it and 30 members opposing it.
"Line 5 is one of the most important energy sources for Michigan families, many of whom rely on propane to heat their homes each winter. With President Biden blocking a pipeline on his first day in office, my amendment would help ensure Line 5 remains open, by prohibiting Biden from using taxpayer dollars to shut it down. Pipelines are the safest way to transport the energy, and I will continue to fight for affordable and reliable energy for Michigan families,” said Moolenaar.
Congressman Moolenaar is Michigan’s senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, which decides funding levels for federal departments, agencies, and programs.
