Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement condemning additional bomb threats against Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Fort Valley State University, this morning:
“Within 24 hours, threats have been made against over a dozen Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the United States, including two in Middle and Southwest Georgia. I urge local, state, and federal authorities to work quickly to identify, apprehend, and bring to justice those responsible for these bomb threats — including this morning’s threat against Fort Valley State University and yesterday’s threat against Albany State University.
“These threats are all the more disturbing because they are happening as we start Black History Month. HBCUs have played a tremendous role in the modern Civil Rights Movement, helping to foster the diversity upon which our nation prides itself. They continue to create leaders who enrich every aspect of American life.
“We cannot let terrorism threaten the vital educational mission and empowering roles these institutions play for African Americans and our communities at large.”
