U.S. sanctions targeting Venezuela have likely had a negative effect on the South American country's economy, a report published Monday by a U.S. government watchdog said.
The report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office came in response to a May 2019 request from Rep. Andy Levin and the foreign affairs committee as the Trump administration heavily employed sanctions against Venezuela in its failed effort to oust its president, Nicolas Maduro, after his 2018 re-election was deemed illegitimate.
"This report makes clear that sanctions imposed by the United States made a dire situation worse," Levin, D-Mich., said in a statement. "The Trump administration, moreover, broadened sanctions with seemingly little thought to the impact they might have on people they claimed to care about."
