Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) applauded last week’s $13,435,552 grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to the Georgia Department of Community Health in Cordele for testing and other COVID-19 mitigation efforts. The funds were made possible by the American Rescue Plan’s Small Rural Hospital Improvement Program (SHIP).

“We continue to face tremendous challenges in Southwest Georgia in fighting COVID-19. This SHIP grant will help Cordele and its surrounding communities test, treat, and vaccinate people so that we can stop the spread of COVID-19 and get back on the road to recovery,” said Congressman Bishop.

Small rural hospitals—those with fewer than 50 beds and Critical Access Hospitals—are key health care resources in their communities. The funds provided by this SHIP grant help hospitals improve COVID-19 testing, expand access to testing for rural residents, and shape public health relief efforts to address local needs.
