Today, Congressman Kustoff (TN-08) voted against H.R.1, a massive government overreach designed to nationalize our elections. This legislation mandates that states give felons the right to vote. Additionally, it makes permanent many of the “pandemic-style” election changes, such as mail-in voting, ballot harvesting, and eliminating voter ID laws.
Among numerous other concerning provisions found in this legislation, H.R. 1 creates the first-ever federal funding of campaigns. It establishes a 6 to 1 government match to any small donor contribution of $200 or less in a congressional or presidential campaign. This means for every $200 the federal government will match $1,200.
“H.R. 1 is not for the American people; it is for Washington politicians. This partisan legislation would ultimately allow the federal government to dictate how states run their elections. It would also send public dollars to fund political campaigns and weaken the security of our elections, making it harder to protect against voter fraud,” said Congressman Kustoff. “Free and fair elections are the foundation of our nation’s government, and this flawed legislation will only lead to further limitations on our right to vote.”
