Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Equality Act, a landmark civil rights bill that would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity:
“LGBTQ people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect just like other Americans. The Equality Act simply extends the federal civil rights protections afforded to all other Americans to LGBTQ Americans—banning discrimination in employment, education, access to credit, jury service, federal funding, housing, and public accommodations based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
“This bill reaffirms our commitment first written in the Declaration of Independence ‘that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ Our Founding Fathers wrote these truths were ‘self-evident’ and I believe to our Creator they are, but to many people they are not. That is why it is important we passed this legislation—to make sure from now on that LGBTQ Americans are treated equally and their rights self-evident.”
