Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act:
“It has become clear after the attack on our democracy on January 6th in particular, we as the Congress needed to take action to protect the democratic republic we hold so dear. We are at a pivotal moment in American history and we must rise to meet it. The For the People Act is a bill that will strengthen our democracy so the great American experiment can flourish for years to come.”
The For the People Act, H.R. 1, will:
- Expand automatic voter registration and same day registration
- Strengthen vote by mail, early voting, and ballot access
- Combat voter intimidation and voter suppression
- Protect elections from foreign interference
- Fix partisan gerrymandering
- Promote digital ad transparency
- Force disclosure of dark money
- Rein in lobbyist influence
- Enforce ethics and conflict of interest rules for all government officials
- Empower small donors with matching funds paid for by lawbreakers, not taxpayers
