Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), Chairman of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, H.R. 842:

“Guaranteeing workers’ right to organize a union is one of the best ways to ensure an improved quality of life for working Americans and their families. Unions are vital to rebuilding the middle class because they help workers fight for fair wages, better benefits, and safe working conditions. The measure is needed now more than ever, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic as workers across the country often have had to work in unsafe conditions for low pay with little bargaining power with their employer.

“The Protecting the Right to Organize Act makes sure workers can choose to form a union by protecting them from anti-union intimidation and retaliation; establishes safeguards so workers can hold free and fair union elections; and introduces meaningful penalties for companies and executives that violate workers’ collective bargaining rights.

“This bill is the most significant piece of legislation for workers’ rights in decades and I am proud to support it.”
