Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement after the Capitol was occupied by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021 in an attempt to stop the certification of the electoral votes from the 2020 Presidential election:

“Yesterday I was prepared to stand up and speak out against my fellow Members of Congress and Senators in their attempt to overturn the legitimate election of Joe Biden as President. I was not prepared for violent rioters to break into the Capitol, encouraged by President Trump. Let me be clear, every single action today that was taken in an attempt to overturn this election was an act of sedition. The actions of elected officials, including President Trump, who have repeatedly lied to their supporters to keep power led us to this horrific moment in American history.

“This must be a turning point for our nation. Enough is enough.

“Thankfully the will of the People was not impeded, only delayed. After the attack on the Capitol, we went back in and performed our Constitutional duty—certifying the electors who chose Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to lead us for the next four years.

“However, if we do not handle this now, it will get worse. I am calling on Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment for the safety of this nation and the integrity of our democracy.”
