John Rose for Congress: U.S. Rep. Rose joins GOP Members of Congress Calling for DOJ to Enforce the Law amid Attempts to Intimidate Supreme Court Justices

WASHINGTON, D.C.— U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-6) joined Rep. Claudia Tenney (NY-22) and more than 40 Republican Members of the House of Representatives in calling on Attorney General Merrick Garland to end the mob rule outside Supreme Court's homes Justices in a letter.

The letter highlights the need to zealously guard the First Amendment, and ensures judges are not intimidated by mob rule. Since the leak of the draft decision, mobs of protestors have swarmed the homes of several U.S. Supreme Court Justices.

Rep. Rose released the following statement:

“I’m grateful to live in a country where peaceful assembly is among the first rights guaranteed to citizens in the constitution; however, that right doesn’t extend to those who seek to intimidate judges into swaying their opinion on a case. The Biden Administration has continuously displayed an unwillingness to enforce our laws. By not denouncing these left-wing agitators, President Biden is explicitly endorsing mob rule and ripping the constitution to shreds by putting his seal of approval on their attempts to influence the court.”

Background:

Following the unprecedented leak of the high court’s take on Dobbs v. Jackson, protestors have continuously demonstrated outside the personal homes of Supreme Court Justices. The pressure campaign, which many fear could turn to violence following a final decision on abortion access, even forced the Senate to approve additional security for the court.

18 U.S.C. § 1507 states:

Whoever, with the intent of interfering with, obstructing, or impeding the administration of justice, or with the intent of influencing any judge, juror, witness, or court officer, in the discharge of his duty, pickets or parades in or near a building housing a court of the United States, or in or near a building or residence occupied or used by such judge, juror, witness, or court officer, or with such intent uses any sound-truck or similar device or resorts to any other demonstration in or near any such building or residence, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both. Nothing in this section shall interfere with or prevent the exercise by any court of the United States of its power to punish for contempt.

The Sixth District includes Cannon, Clay, Coffee, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, White, and Wilson counties as well as portions of Cheatham and Van Buren counties. Representative Rose is an eighth-generation farmer, small business owner, and attorney, and currently serves on the Financial Services Committee.
