Recently, Congressman Huizenga had the opportunity to discuss the US-Canadian Border closure with NBC News Now. During the interview, Rep. Huizenga emphasized the impact the closure is having on families who have been unable to reunite for more than 16 months and the significant economic impact the closure is having on Michigan as well as Canada.

While vaccinated Canadians are now permitted to enter the US and return without having to quarantine for 14 days, Americans still cannot travel by car to Canada without quarantining for 14 days upon arrival. Meanwhile, there has been no public progress on talks related to Canadians and Americans traveling across the border using a negative PCR test, which is currently used and accepted to cross the border via air travel.

Communities in Michigan and in Canada are struggling economically due to the closure. Having regular travel suspended for 16 months has negatively impacted small businesses on both sides of the border. NBC News reports that one estimate shows the closure is costing the economy a massive $1.5 billion per month. The current border policy is scheduled to be reviewed again on July 21st.
