Bipartisan panel will bring answers, accountability for terror assault on Capitol
U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), the first member of Congress to demand consequences for seditious members, today voted in favor of forming a landmark bipartisan panel to investigate the January 6, 2021 terror attack on the United States Capitol.
Pascrell has been outspoken in demanding accountability for the terror riot and Republican attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. On December 11, 2020, Pascrell urged House leadership to “refuse to seat in the 117th Congress any Members-elect seeking to make Donald Trump an unelected dictator.”
The text of Rep. Pascrell’s prepared remarks is provided below.
Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. Remarks on H.R. 3233,
National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act
Madam Speaker, I rise today in support of truth and justice.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the worst external terrorist attack in our modern history. But the gravest attack ever on American democracy came 133 days ago.
That attack was born of lies. Big Lies -- about the election. About voting. And about our democracy.
These lies divided our country. They spread across our land like a plague.
On December 11, I warned of elected officials across this nation amplifying Big Lies. On January 6, the world saw the result.
Like the 9/11 commission it is modeled after, this commission must hold allegiance only to truth. A full investigation of this attack must reflect on how the spark of insurrection was ignited and who fanned the flames.
I remember well how the 9/11 Commissioners were unafraid to get to the bottom of what happened in an event that shook this nation to its core. The Congress took the commission recommendations and passed laws to better protect our nation from terrorism.
The 1/6 insurrection shook this nation to its core. We need a commission unafraid to follow the facts wherever they lead.
Like 9/11, I will never forget it. This commission can document exactly what happened. Its findings can help us determine how to best defend our democracy and hold those responsible to account.
It is our sacred duty. Thank you and I yield back.
