Evans: Senate Must Pass Women’s Health Protection Act

Pennsylvania

Congressman Dwight Evans (D-PA-3) today renewed his call for the U.S. Senate to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, a House-passed bill he voted for that would put Roe v. Wade’s protections for abortion rights into federal law.

“The draft Supreme Court opinion should alarm every American who, like me, believes in the right to choose and opposes forced pregnancy, which would have a disproportionate impact on  Black and Brown women. I voted for the Women’s Health Protection Act when it passed the House last September. That was over seven months ago – it’s time for the Senate to hear the voices of tens of millions of American women and allies who support reproductive freedom – and act!” Evans said.

“The Senate has made more than 160 exceptions to the filibuster – the ‘Swiss cheese filibuster,’ as I call it. It is time for senators to make an exception to protect one of Americans’ most fundamental rights – the right to choose.

“I want to reassure everyone that abortion is still legal in Pennsylvania and nationwide today. This decision is not yet official, even though it is alarming. If you need abortion care in Pennsylvania, you are still free to seek it. I am grateful that Governor Tom Wolf has repeatedly used his veto to protect these rights from the Republican-led legislature.

“Anyone who is more upset by the leak than the threat to women’s rights has their priorities backwards. And this looming threat from the Trump-McConnell court should show everyone that elections matter.”

Evans represents Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, which includes Northwest and West Philadelphia and parts of North, South, Southwest and Center City Philadelphia. His website is evans.house.gov and his social media handle is @RepDwightEvans on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
