Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-01) released the following statement on House Democrats' attempt to undermine integrity in the U.S. election system through legislation that would gut state voter ID laws, publicly fund political campaigns, and federalize elections.
"Speaker Pelosi has already tried and failed to overturn a state-certified election in Iowa, and now her sights are set on a federal takeover of our entire election system. You're going to be hard pressed to convince any Iowan this is "voting rights" legislation when their taxpayer dollars could be used to fill Speaker Pelosi's campaign coffers or that having to show your ID to vote is "voter suppression." This is a thinly veiled attempt to shift power to the Democratic party and centralize all control in Washington, and Iowans see right through it.
"Iowa's state legislature has implemented strong election integrity measures that make it easier to vote and hard to cheat. I'll continue promoting confidence in Iowa's free and fair election system and reminding my colleagues what our Constitution explicitly says: states have total authority to run and certify elections, not the federal government." -Congresswoman Ashley Hinson
House Democrats' legislation:
- Sends taxpayer dollars to political campaigns: Creates a six-to-one government match of campaign contributions. For every $200 sent to a congressional or presidential campaign, the federal government will match $1,200 using public funds.
- Overturns state voting requirements: Disregards state voter ID laws, forcing states to allow sworn statements from another person to be used in place of identification.
- Makes pandemic style voting permanent: Codifies last minute voting changes made in the name of COVID-19, including requirements for states to accept late ballots.
