Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-01) released the following statement on the Biden Administration's delayed release of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Fiscal Year 2021 Annual Report. Hinson recently called for the Administration to release this report. The report revealed that there were over 100,000 fewer deportations compared to the previous fiscal year, despite illegal immigrant encounters surging.

“President Biden has turned a blind eye to the border crisis and his Administration continues to dodge accountability for their open border policies. It is unacceptable that they tried to withhold this information from the American people, but this report makes it clear that their lax policies are incentivizing illegal immigration and making Iowans, and all Americans, less safe."

Background

  • In February, the Biden Administration issued enforcement guidance that tied the hands of ICE agents, making it harder to deport illegal immigrants.
  • More than 50 percent of ICE removals in the 2021 fiscal year came in the 5 months before this guidance was issued. President Trump was still in office the majority of that period.
  • After delays from the Administration, Hinson led her colleagues in calling on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to release information on how their lax policies are impacting immigration enforcement.
