Census data shows gigantic growth in Bergen, Hudson, Passaic; Paterson surpasses 150,000 count goal and remains third largest city in Garden State

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) today celebrated data released by the U.S. Census Bureau showing that North Jersey communities experienced greater-than-expected growth, particularly in communities within the Ninth Congressional District including Paterson (approximately 9% expansion), Clifton (7%), and Secaucus (43%). The census counted 792,321 residents living in the Ninth District.

“Once again, New Jersey has defied all the odds,” said Rep. Pascrell. “Naysayers said New Jersey would shrink, but we continue to grow. Garden State growth is no accident but a testament to years of planning and salesmanship. Our office held Census fairs, published op-eds, and sounded the alarm on Trump’s Census sabotage. With Congressman Pallone and state government leaders we secured millions to help New Jersey get a full count. Today we see how much succeeded and can toast the New Jersey Boom.

“But New Jersey’s growth is powered by the beautiful communities of North Jersey and our Ninth District. After just missing 150,000 last year, that Paterson has almost counted 160,000 residents in 2020 can help our city better access the federal resources it needs and deserves. Places like Clifton, Fort Lee, Secaucus and others are the economic, cultural, and political engines of our state and growing. The most vibrant, diverse cities and towns in America are right here and they draw people like a magnet. North Jersey is where it’s all happening.”

Rep. Pascrell and his office were highly active in outreach efforts to promote the Census throughout northern New Jersey in 2020. After he joined his delegation colleagues in asking state government leaders allocate funds to help support a full count, the 2020 state budget included $9 million for census outreach. Pascrell also led the fight in Washington against attempts by the previous administration to politicize the Census.
