Two decades ago on December 11, China joined the World Trade Organization, helping grow the communist government’s global rise
U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) today voted in favor of three pieces of legislation condemning the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) continued human rights abuses – including the genocide being perpetrated against the Uyghur people. The trio of bills approved by the House make clear that the actions of the CCP must be denounced and held accountable.
“Let us be as plain as we can: the Chinese Communist Party is today a purveyor of genocide and a leading opponent of liberty in the world,” said Rep. Pascrell. “Weeks after CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping all but declared himself dictator for life, we cannot hide our heads to the threat posed by his government. These measures today represent Congress’s recognition of the CCP menace as it presides over a growing totalitarian state. But recognition is not enough, and we must continue directly confronting China. That is why I am especially proud to cosponsor the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act to continue to deter corporations from profiting off slave and forced labor.”
“Our votes today come just days before we mark 20 years since China formally entered the World Trade Organization. I remain proud of my vote to oppose the China’s elevation as America’s decision to allow full membership in the world economy was a grievous mistake that paved the road for where we are today. The CCP climbed America’s back to economic power and is now using that power to crush democratic norms, empower dictators, undermine workers, rig the world economy, and threaten America’s allies. We should reckon with that legacy and with the world community as we work to halt these threats.”
The legislation approved by the House of Representatives today is: the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (H.R. 1155) which will impose sanctions on the CCP for its subjugation of the Uyghur people; a formal condemnation of the House the CCP’s Uyghur genocide (H.Res. 317); and a resolution highlighting the CCP’s silencing and possible kidnapping of tennis star Peng Shuai after she revealed her sexual assault by Zhang Gaoli a former CCP Vice Premier and member of the politburo standing committee, the CCP’s most powerful decision-making body (H.Res.837).
